How To Make Your Small Home Feel Bigger

There is nothing wrong with having a small home. Sometimes, a small place to live is all you want or need. Sometimes it’s just what suits the budget best. No matter what, the fact is that living somewhere that might be seen as small is nothing to be ashamed of. However, if you want to truly make the most of that space, it’s a good idea to put some plans in place to make it feel bigger if you possibly can. Not only will this make you feel more comfortable, but it will also help any visitors you might have to feel happy to be there too. With that in mind, here are some tactics you can implement that will allow you to enjoy the space you have, no matter how much space that might be.

The color of a room makes a lot more difference than you might think when it comes to improving the space you have. Although painting your walls a different color and investing in different flooring and curtains won’t physically make the room or property bigger, it will make it feel more spacious, and that’s crucial; it’s all about how the place feels and looks not the actual dimensions.

This is why it’s so important to think carefully before you put any paint on any surface. If you can use lighter colors, the room will feel much larger because any light coming in will reflect off the white or off-white walls. On the other hand, if you use dark colors, the light will be absorbed, and it might even make the space feel smaller.

Everyone will need some form of furniture in their homes; a bed, couch, and closet are among the essentials. Yet although – or perhaps because – these items are crucial, that doesn’t mean they can’t be useful in terms of opening up your space too.

One option is to find furniture that has storage included, such as a footstool that opens up or a coffee table with drawers. In this way, your home will be less cluttered and feel larger as a result. Or you might decide to choose more portable furniture such as a bean bag sofa. This means you can move things around more easily, determine exactly the right position for them, or change the room’s layout depending on who is visiting and how many people are coming.

The more natural light you can allow into the room, the more spacious it will feel. Think of a room that has a large patio door or an entire wall of windows that open up onto a green space – that will feel much bigger than a room without any windows.

Although these two ideas are the far extremes of design, if you can let at least a little natural light inside, you’ll feel as though the room is bigger. To do this, make sure the windows are clean and that they are free of anything that might obstruct them. This could include:

  • Heavy curtains
  • Tiebacks
  • Items placed on a windowsill

Remove these items and allow more sunlight to come into the room for the best difference. As a bonus, this will also boost your vitamin D levels, making you feel happier and healthier.
